Last December 27, 2023, was the 350th anniversary of the first of the apparitions of the Lord Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at the Visitation Convent in Paray-le-Monial. These apparitions lasted for 17 years and greatly shaped the faith of Catholics, particularly in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Implicit in the Scriptures themselves, the devotion had developed in the Middle Ages and would find in the message entrusted to St. Margaret Mary a great impetus for subsequent centuries.

We wish to offer here a glimpse of the events that took place in order to recover that early enthusiasm. Doing so will help us live with greater generosity and “affection” (in the Ignatian sense of the term), enhancing our desire to “praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord.” We must necessarily emphasize some aspects, neglecting others that deserve more attention, and thus limiting ourselves to a succinct review of the facts. We mention only a few of the revelations, chosen for their particular relevance, without any claim to exhaustiveness.
