“After appropriate consultation and assessment, the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China have agreed to extend for another two years the Provisional Agreement regarding the appointment of Bishops, which was signed on 22 September 2018 and previously extended on 22 October 2020. The Vatican party is committed to continuing a respectful and constructive dialogue with the Chinese party to ensure a productive implementation of the Accord and further development of bilateral relations, with a view to fostering the mission of the Catholic Church and the good of the Chinese people.” This is the text with which, on October 22, 2022, the Holy See Press Office announced the renewal of the Agreement.
For its part, China’s Xinhua news agency reported: “‘China and the Vatican have agreed to extend a provisional agreement on the appointment of bishops for two years,’ Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Monday, October 24.
‘The decision was made on October 22 following friendly negotiations between the two sides,’ Wang said at a daily media briefing. ‘The two sides will continue to maintain close communication and consultation, promote the smooth implementation of the provisional agreement, and continue to advance the process of improving bilateral ties,’ Wang added.”
