Toward the Second Session of the 2021-2024 Synod

Welcome to the June issue of La Civiltà Cattolica, English edition.

In the article “Toward the Second Session of the 2021-2024 Synod” by Giacomo Costa SJ, the ongoing Synod process is explored, focusing on the mission of a synodal Church. It highlights the acceptance of Assembly proposals, the creation of a Study Group to delve into 10 key themes, and emphasizes the importance of maintaining a synodal spirit within local Churches. Costa, as the Special Secretary of the Synod of Bishops and President of the San Fedele Cultural Foundation, provides insight into the evolving directions of the Church’s mission and communion.

In “Anglicans and Catholics on the Way to the Future: Lessons from Malines,” Keith F. Pecklers, SJ, traces the history of Anglican-Catholic relations starting with the ‘Malines Conversations’ of 1921-26. He discusses the establishment of the ‘International Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission’ in 2000 and the ‘Malines Conversations Group’ in 2013, which continue to foster ecumenical dialogue in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. The article underscores the ongoing commitment to unity, as Anglicans and Catholics progress together in a journey marked by faith, hope, and charity.

Saint Thomas Aquinas: An Important Heritage” by Ottavio De Bertolis SJ, encapsulates the enduring wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas. It emphasizes Aquinas’s belief in the constancy of truth regardless of its proclaimer, his preference for inquiry over immediate answers, and his method of giving due consideration to diverse viewpoints. The article also reflects on Aquinas’s humility and openness to learning, illustrating that true wisdom acknowledges the value of all contributions to thought.

In “Jewish-Catholic Dialogue in the Shadow of the War in Gaza,” David Neuhaus SJ examines the impact of the Gaza conflict on interfaith relations. The article documents Pope Francis’s stance that war is a loss for everyone and underscores the shared responsibility for civilian casualties. It also explores the potential repercussions of the conflict on the dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Jewish community, amidst growing misunderstandings and differing perspectives.
