December 2021 Issue
The Theology of History in the Book of Judith
Welcome to our first issue for 2022.

This January we present two articles about Pope Francis’ journey to Greece and Cyprus in early December by our Editor-in-chief Fr. Antonio Spadaro, who accompanied the pontiff.

‘The Spirit of Enlargement’ – Pope Francis in Cyprus and Greeceis an account of the trip. While speaking to the Church of Greece about the universal Church, the pope re-launched an image of the Church as patient, as a listener, as fraternal, as synodal, as attentive to the challenges of the time. A Church which is not triumphalist nor obsessed with numbers, open to a laboratory of inculturation, and capable of “thinking beyond.”

‘The Logic of the Inexplicable’: Pope Francis in conversation with the Jesuits of Greece continues our highly popular series that follows the pope’s meetings with his fellow Jesuits around the world. The pontiff engages and responds extemporaneously to questions from his brothers, giving us a unique insight into his heart and mind.

‘Born of a Woman, Born under the Law’: Christmas according to Saint Paulexplores the earliest references to the birth of Jesus. Paul does not speak of a nativity scene, a manger, or shepherds, but announces the essential: the birth of the Saviour in the flesh, for our salvation.

The eminent Protestant theologian Eberhard Jüngel was famous for his ability to bring the basic ideas of the sixteenth-century Reformation into the contemporary world. On an ecumenical level, his theological clarity and evangelical vigoromade a lasting contribution to the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, signed on October 31, 1999.

The temptation to triumphalism – Christianity without the cross – and its more insidious form, spiritual worldliness – is difficult to discern. If there is a theme in the magisterium of Bergoglio-Francis that recurs with particular frequency, it is precisely this, Diego Fares explains in Against Triumphalism and Spiritual Worldliness.

The Book of Judith, rather than describing events, aims to present a “theology of history.” In a single episode it gives us the whole story of God’s people. emblematically summarized as an apocalyptic confrontation with the forces of evil. The victory of Judith is the messianic proclamation of Israel triumphing over the demonic power of evil.
